Senator Siewert has congratulated activists from Greenpeace and the Sea Shepherd Society for upholding international law and attempting to stop Japanese whaling operations in the Southern Ocean and The Australian Antarctic Territory. “These NGOs are doing what the Australian Government should be doing - taking action to protect our whales. Having failed to act before, the Australian Government must now, at a bare minimum, send a surveillance vessel to monitor the illegal whale slaughter. “Minister Ian Campbell, having been outspoken in the leadâup to the slaughter in the Southern Ocean, was missing in action when it counted. The Howard Government has been letting nonâgovernment organisations do the hard work, but there are limits to what these groups are able to do. “If the Government is serious about wanting to protect whales it will begin its own surveillance, and start taking steps now to ensure that this hunt is the last,” Senator Siewert said.
