Our national security at risk by Morrison's climate inaction

BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP

SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE

OUR NATIONAL SECURITY AT RISK BY MORRISON’S CLIMATE INACTION

Scott Morrison’s lack of action on climate change is putting Australia’s national security at risk,

says a former Australian Defence Chief who also praises Labor’s plan to address the issue.

Former Australian Defence Force Chief Admiral Chris Barrie, speaking on behalf of the

Australian Security Leaders Climate Group (ASLCG), said climate change remained the most

significant threat to Australia’s security.

He criticised the Morrison Government for claiming to have a national security agenda but

ignoring climate change.

‘It is perplexing that a government that claims to be strong on security issues is weak, and

even silent, on the greatest threat to the future security, safety and well-being of all

Australians.’ – Chris Barrie, 6 December 2021

The ASLCG welcomed Labor’s Powering Australia plan and our proposal to undertake a

climate risk assessment and establish an Australian National Prevention and Resilience

Framework, integrating climate concerns into Defence Force planning.

Labor understands that climate change is not only real, it has serious ramifications for global

security and the Australian Defence Force.

We have already seen the response work the ADF has undertaken in climate-related disasters

such as last year’s bushfires.

These national security threats, however, go beyond the domestic, with the 2020 Defence

Strategic Update highlighting that threats to human security – including climate change – are

likely to result in greater political instability and friction within and between countries and

reshape our security environment.

Australia is unable to achieve lasting national security without an effective response to climate

change.

An elected Albanese Labor Government will undertake an Urgent Climate Risk Assessment

and Regular National Climate Risk Assessments and build an Australian National Prevention

and Resilience Framework.

Only Labor has a genuine plan to address climate change and keep Australians safe.
