One million broadband subscribers.

Senator the Hon Helen Coonan Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts

Media Release

144/04 31 August 2004

Australia’s take-up of broadband services has now passed one million subscribers following continued strong growth over the first six months of 2004.

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan has welcomed the latest Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s ‘Snapshot of Broadband Deployment’ showing that there were 1,047,800 broadband services in operation at the end of June 2004.

“This is the strongest quarter of growth in the demand for broadband services we have seen and there have been half a million subscribers added in just the last 12 months,” Senator Coonan said.

The growth of subscriber numbers for the June quarter was 26 percent, with ADSL broadband continuing to be the most popular access technology.

“This positive result provides further evidence of the rapid progress that has been made in making broadband services available to Australians at attractive prices,” Senator Coonan said.

“The Howard Government is committed to making affordable broadband services available to more Australians.”

With a significant number of service providers now offering a range of highly competitive broadband services, together with the success of the Government’s $108 million Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme (HiBIS) in delivering broadband to rural and regional Australians, strong growth is expected to continue.
