Access to 2,4-D to continue under permit

The use of the highly volatile herbicide 2,4-D will be allowed under permits until 30 April 2007 when a final decision is made on its future availability, Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Mr Peter McGauran, announced today.

Mr McGauran said the permits would be issued by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and conditions would be attached to address the risk of damage to the environment and crops.

“The issuing of permits would be subject to relevant state or territory authorities providing assurances that any risks to the environment and crops are minimal and can be managed. Permit conditions would require regular monitoring and reporting of any

problems,” Mr McGauran said.

“Farmers, particularly in Western Australia, have been critical of the APVMA’s proposal to suspend all use over the warmer months.

Mr McGauran said the decision by the APVMA to consider the use of 24 products containing highly volatile forms of 2,4-D, under permit, during the suspension period of

3 October 2006 to 30 April 2007 recognised regional variations in farming systems across Australia.

“Farmers will welcome the news that access can continue where the state or territory authorities are able to show that risks to the sensitive environment and crops are minimal.

Where the risks are not considered minimal or manageable, the suspension period will apply. The APVMA decision to apply a suspension period and to issue new instructions for use aims to address the risk to the environment and crops.
