Abstract If 50% of the adult population in Australia becomes sufficiently physically active, the cost to the community in the treatment of cardiovascular disease can be reduced by [274m now and [400m by the year 2000. Federal/state governments, employer and employee organizations, and life insurance agencies would benefit from a policy which encourages physical fitness and reduces death due to cardiovascular disease. 1
