FOREIGN AFFAIRS—CHINA—XINJIANG PROVINCE

The Leader of the Australian Greens (Senator Bob Brown) amended general business notice of motion no. 501 by leave and, pursuant to notice of motion not objected to as a formal motion, moved—That the Senate—

 (a) notes the violent unrest in Xinjiang province in China on 5 July 2009 in which up to 200 people died, according to official reports; and

 (b) calls on the Government to seek assurances from the People's Republic of China that human and political rights are upheld, as under the Chinese Constitution and international law.
