East Gippslanders will be able to enjoy table tennis, squash and racquetball in a purpose-built facility in Bairnsdale by the end of this year, according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said the funding contributions from local, state and federal government had been confirmed and construction of the $1.5 million facility would begin at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve within weeks.

The multi-purpose sports centre will feature 10 table tennis courts, three carpet bowls rinks and six glass-backed squash courts in an adjoining building.

“It has been a long-time coming but it is great to see the project getting off the ground and all credit is due to the Keen-agers group which has been instrumental in the development of the facility,” Mr Chester said.

“This project has also had strong support from the local community and local businesses which have assisted in raising more than $100,000.”

Mr Chester met this week with John Gale from Keen-agers who has been the driving force behind the project.

“John and his committee members have done an excellent job to put the table tennis club on a strong financial footing and it is exciting for all the members that they are about to have their own ‘home’,” Mr Chester said.

“The new facility will have international standard flooring and will allow the club to attract more players of all ages to enjoy the health benefits of table tennis.

“The new facilities for squash and racquetball will also attract hundreds of players to the centre and ensure the facility receives plenty of use.

“There have been many delays because of the Federal Government’s refusal to provide its share of funding but after strong lobbying by shire representatives and my office, I am pleased to see the $700,000 has been provided and this project should be completed by October this year.”
