House: House of Representatives

Portfolio:Industrial Relations

Purpose

To provide for the phasing out of part of the general levy imposed on waterfront employers.

Background

Refer to the Digest for the Stevedoring Industry Legislation Amendment Bill 1990.

Main Provisions

Clause 7 will insert a new section 9A into the Stevedoring Industry Levy Act 1977. The proposed section will allow the Minister to notify in the Gazette that the levy ceases to be payable in respect of Division B waterside workers (i.e. those who are not employed on a weekly hiring basis). A finishing date is not to be notified in respect of a port unless all employers at the port have changed their employment arrangements in accordance with the reform agreement.

The other provisions remove sexist language and make minor amendments to the calculation of the levy imposed on the loading of local cargo.
