The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Philip Ruddock, today confirmed that Mr Louis Farrakhan had been granted a visa to enter Australia.

Mr Ruddock said the visa had been granted after Mr Farrakhan was counselled by the Australian Ambassador and the Principal Migration Officer in Seoul and had undertaken to abide by certain conditions.

“During the counselling session Mr Farrakhan and two members of his party were advised that while Australia supports freedom of speech, it also expects people to avoid vilifying any sectors of the community," the Minister said.

“Mr Farrakhan was also told that Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act*prohibits behaviour which could offend, insult or intimidate individuals or groups of people. He was asked to respect these laws and values which are important to our tolerant and diverse multicultural society."

Mr Ruddock said after Mr Farrakhan gave a written undertaking and verbal assurances that he and his party would abide by these conditions they were granted the short-stay visitor visas as requested.
