State Must Save Cowper Hospitals, says Hartsuyker

Local hospitals must get their share of any rescue package for the NSW health service, the Nationals’ Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said today (Friday).

NSW Premier Nathan Rees is reported to be asking the Federal Government for $2.5bn to rebuild the state’s hospitals.

“If this rescue package for Nathan Rees’ failed state is approved, I will be working with my State colleagues to press for funds go to the local hospitals in Kempsey, Macksville, Bellingen, Coffs Harbour and Maclean,” said Mr Hartsuyker.

“They are all in need of help to ensure that local people can receive the health services they need in their own communities and without having to travel long distances to regional centres.

“The longer maintenance and upgrading is delayed, the greater the likelihood that the cost of fixing the problems will become too great and the State Government will respond by closing the facilities on the grounds of cost.

“We know from reports from western NSW that we are in danger of seeing our health service reduced to Third World levels, with hospitals running out of painkillers, staff not receiving wages and air-conditioning not working, all because the State Government isn’t paying its bills.

“The performance of the NSW State Government is a betrayal of hard-working hospital staff who are left to pick up the pieces and it’s a betrayal of everyone who needs to use the health service.”
