Shadow Minister To Visit Jakarta Stephen Martin - Shadow Minister for Defence

Media Statement - 19 July 2000

The Shadow Minister for Defence, Stephen Martin, will begin three days of high level talks in Indonesia tomorrow.

During the visit Mr Martin will meet with President Wahid; Defense Minister Sudarsono; the Minister for Marine Exploration and Fisheries Sarwono Kusumaatmadja; Defense Secretary General Sugiono; TNI Commander Admiral Widodo; Dewi Fortuna Anwar from the Habibie Centre; Ferry Tingaggoy from the TNI Parliamentary Faction; General Lumintang the Commander of LEMHAMNAS; DPR Speaker Akbar Tandjung; as well as other senior political, military and academic figures.

"Labor believes that this visit comes at a very important moment in the shaping of ongoing Australian/Indonesian relations.

"I am looking forward to discussing the shape of the relations between our two countries and hearing what President Wahid's view on the direction these relations should take.

"I see this visit as an opportunity for building a new relationship with a newly democratic Indonesia. It is important to repair, rebuild and recover our fractured relations with Indonesia, with a view to undertaking mutually beneficial, co-operative endeavours," Mr Martin said.
