Media Release The Hon Fran Bailey, MP

27 January 2006

MINISTER BAILEY WELCOMES AIR CANADA FLIGHTS Air Canada plans to launch daily flights between Toronto-Los Angeles-Sydney with new Boeing 777 aircraft, starting in the first half of 2007.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Minister Bailey’s forthright meeting with the senior decision-makers of Air Canada on Monday this week and her opening of Tourism Australia’s new Toronto Office.

“I welcome the news of Air Canada introducing this new daily service, which will help stimulate the transpacific aviation market,” Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, said today.

“For too long, the North American market has failed to meet expectations. We need to grow this tourism market to create more jobs in Australia.”

Today’s announcement, coupled with the long standing and significant commitment of Qantas, United Airlines and Air New Zealand, is welcome news indeed.

“I am particularly pleased after meeting with senior executives from Air Canada in Toronto on 23 January that this service has been announced so soon. It is a great opportunity for the Australian tourism industry to build on Tourism Australia’s work in the Canadian and US Markets," Fran Bailey said.

“Canada has proven a strong, consistent market for Australia over the past few years with growth currently around seven per cent and arrivals now topping 100,000 annually.”
