Mark Vaile - Trade Minister

Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, today congratulated Tasmanian winery Pipers Brook Vineyard on its achievement in being named 1999 Australian Exporter of the Year.


“Pipers Brook is an outstanding example of a small enterprise in regional Australia that is competing on a global scale”, said Mr Vaile.


Pipers Brook Vineyard, which also won the Small and Medium Exporter Award, more than doubled its exports of top quality table wines during 1998-99 and now generates 30% of its annual revenue from overseas sales.


Mr Vaile also congratulated other category winners on their export achievements.


“These companies deserve national recog nition for the contribution that they are making to Australia’s economic future,” said Mr Vaile.


“They are proving to all Australian companies, large and small, that we have the capacity and the determination to compete - and win - in the international marketplace.  And in the process, they are earning valuable export income, and generating jobs for Australians.”

The 1999 Australian Export Awards were announced today in the presence of the Prime Minister, John Howard, at a Gala Presentation Dinner at the Crown Towers Entertainment Complex in Melbourne.

Commonwealth Bank Small-to-Medium Manufacturer Award - Pipers Brook Vineyard

Columbus Line Agribusiness Award - Betatene Pty Ltd


Betatene is the world’s largest producer of natural beta caroten e, which is used as a dietary supplement and food colouring.  Over 90 percent of revenue comes from export sales, with the product having gained particular popularity in the USA.

Auran Holdings creates computer game software for the international market, with sales in 58 countries.  Its strategy game, Dark Reign, has sold 700,000 copies world-wide.

IDP Education Australia Education Award - University of New South Wales


The University of NS W generates 53% of total revenues from export sales.  It has collaborative arrangements with 120 overseas universities and provides over 400 undergraduate and postgraduate courses to over 6,800 international students.

AusIndustry Emerging Exporter Award - Secure Network Solutions Limited


Secure Network Solutions exports IT security solutions to 27 countries in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.   Export sales growth exceeded 400% in 1998, taking export sales to 25% of total revenue.

Australian Outback Travel is well-kno wn for its safari tours of Northern Australia.  It earns almost 90% of its revenue from overseas tourism, particularly from Continental Europe and the UK.
