Defence recruiters are coming to a town near you The Australian Defence Forces could have a recruiting office in virtually every town in Australia, as a result of a pilot programme being run through the Federal Government’s Job Network.

Employment Services Minister Mal Brough said Job Network members and Work for the Dole Coordinators in Queensland had begun identifying prospective recruits for the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force.

'This innovative trial connects Australia’s largest recruitment network-Job Network-with one of Australia’s largest employers-the Australian Defence Forces,' Mr Brough said.

'We will be reviewing the results in six months and, all going well, will look towards introducing the scheme across Australia.'

Currently, the Australian Defence Force conducts its recruitment through a limited number of dedicated recruiting offices, extensive advertising and outreach programmes.

'The armed forces recruit about 11,000 personnel a year,' Mr Brough said.

'I don’t think a lot of people realise what big employers the armed forces are, or the variety of jobs on offer.

'A lot of people draw the line at pilots, sailors and infantry. But there is a huge variety of support careers such as electricians, musicians, administration officers, store people, mechanics, cooks, linguists, medical assistants and parachute riggers.'

Mr Brough said the defence forces also offered many entry-level jobs and provided extensive training.

'Ultimately, through the Job Network and Community Work Coordinators, the ADF could effectively have upwards of 2000 recruiting offices throughout Australia,' Mr Brough said.

'The scheme will mean that local Job Network offices will have information about a career in the Defence Forces and can refer suitable job seekers directly to the ADF.

'People undertaking Work for the Dole can also talk to their Community Work Coordinator about the wide range of exciting full-time and Reserve jobs available in the ADF.'
