Senator Belinda Neal

Shadow Minister for Child Care, Consumer Affairs, Local Government and Housing

5 June 1998

The Government’s announcement of further plans for the petroleum industry is absurd when they have still not carried out their plans for the retail petrol industry announced in 1996, Belinda Neal, Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs, said today.

The proposals were expected to bring down the price of petrol but the Federal Government’s inaction has meant that nothing has been done to help consumers.

The Sites Act and the Petroleum Franchise Act have not been repealed and the Minister’s delay in appointing an arbitrator has meant that the negotiations for an oilcode have not been concluded.

The inaction of the Federal coalition means that the steps that could have brought petrol prices down haven’t occurred and that consumers have paid with higher petrol prices.
