Title: Newstart and Youth Allowance Numbers for December

The December figures detailing the number of people receiving unemployment benefits including Newstart Allowance and Youth Allowance have fallen in Eden-Monaro when compared to the same time last year, Federal Member Gary Nairn and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, said today.

“When compared to the same time last year the number receiving these benefits has fallen by 200 across Eden-Monaro.”

“In previous years the numbers of unemployed have risen from November to December as you would expect because school leavers enter the market and also people transfer their registration from other places while they try to seek employment on the coast over summer.”

“These figures form part of a continuing trend toward falling unemployment over the past couple of years in our region,” Mr Nairn said.

“There were 200 less people looking for work in December than the previous December which reflects the longer term general trend of falling unemployment. This is despite very strong population growth over the past year.

“Continued strong economic growth is resulting in jobs throughout our region which is resulting in a larger workforce but fewer people unemployed,” Gary Nairn concluded.
