Nairn Backs Training and Industry Promotion for Geospatial Solutions

The Special Minister of State, The Hon Gary Nairn MP has focused on the importance of targeted training in the tertiary and vocational sectors, to ensure graduates are developed to support Australia’s emerging geospatial industries, in a speech to the combined 5th Trans Tasman Survey Conference and 2nd Queensland Spatial Industry Conference in Cairns today.

“Our universities, and where appropriate, the TAFE sector, need to ensure their courses meet the specific needs of an industry which will play an integral role in supporting the Australian Government’s targeted engagement with citizens in the years ahead”, Mr Nairn said.

Mr Nairn welcomed the decision by the Online Communications Council meeting held earlier this month, to back a National Address Management Framework. The Council supported partnerships between the Australian Government’s Cross Jurisdictional Chief Information Officers’ Committee (CJCIOC), the Public Sector Mapping Agencies and ANZLIC, the spatial information council.

He emphasised the significance of getting spatially enabled government on the agenda of the ministerial council.

“The OCC meeting backed some important initiatives which will elevate the importance of geospatial solutions for government.

“There’s an increasing acknowledgement within government that geospatial solutions can provide solutions to identify where health, education, social services and infrastructure needs are across Australia.

Those in emergency services such as fire, ambulance and disaster detection response and recovery are also realising the crucial need for mapping information at all stages of dealing with national disasters.

“I encourage those in the geospatial community to connect closely with the training base which supports your industry and to continue to liaise with us in government at all levels, so that we understand both the capacity and the opportunities ahead, which lie with geospatial solutions”, Mr Nairn said.
