HIGH COMMISSIONER TO VANUATU

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, : announced today in Vila that Mr Michael Ovington presented his : credentials as Australia’s first High Commissioner to Vanuatu : (formerly the New Hebrides) during the country's independence ■ celebrations. . ■ >

I Mr Peacock recalled that Australia had long standing

j links with Vanuatu and had taken a close interest in its 1 decolonisation. Australia was the first country other than the : condominium powers to establish resident representation, in the form of a consulate, in 1978.

Mr Ovington, 35, was formerly-AustraliaA Consul in Noumea from 1978 to 1980. He has also -served in Jakarta and Bar es Salaam. He is a graduate of the University of Sydney and is married with three children.
