The Minister for the Interior

■ The Northern Territory’s cattle turn-off for 1969-70 is

believed to have reached 230,000 head worth almost §21.5 million.

■ The figures are given in the Northern Territory Report

for 1969-70 issued today by the Minister for the Interior, Mr

Peter Nixon. ·

The report says the production was achieved despite drought

in some regions, and an abnormally dry "wet" season last summer.

It was an increase on the turn-off of 210,000 head worth about

§20 million in 1968-69.

However, because of the drought conditions and higher "

than average prices in the southern States much of the 1969-70

turn-off was of store cattle and breeders. As a result production

v/as likely .to be reduced over the next two years.

Of the 1969-70 production some 60,800 head valued at

§5 million are estimated to have passed through Northern Territory

abattoirs while 68,500 head worth §9.5 million went to interstate

fat cattle markets and over 100,000 head worth §7 million to

interstate store cattle outlets.
