DEFENCE FORCE MONTHLY EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS (MAY 1977)

The total strength of the Defence Force was

70,369 at the end of May, the Minister for Defence,

Mr D.J. Killen, said today.

This was within one per cent of the June 1977

target of 69,666.

Mr Killen said the net gain to the Defence

Force during May was 155, bringing the net increase

for the financial year to 1,595.

Individual Service strengths were: Navy 16,488,

Army 32,216, and Air Force 21,665.

Permanent Force

There was a total of 824 enlistments recorded

during May, including 603 male, and 104 female, general

enlistments. Mr Killen added that the level of recruiting

continued to be satisfactory.

A total of 25 officers resigned from the

Services during May. Of these, 14 had completed the

required length of service to qualify for a pension.

Comparable numbers for May 1976 were 39 resignations,

with 26 eligible for pension.

Of the 713 male other ranks (excluding reserves

on full-time service) who completed their engagements

in May, 539, or 75.6%, re-engaged for a further term.

Reserve Force

At the end of May, the Reserve Force with

training obligations totalled 23,175. This figure

comprised: Navy 968, Army 21,747, and Air Force 460.
