December 17 1992

The Minister for the Arts and Territories, Wendy Fatin, today announced the appointment of Ms Sue Milliken and Dr Stuart Cunningham to the board of the Australian Film Commission.

Both appointments will be for three years.

Ms Milliken is a well-known film identity whose production credits date back to 1977 and include two Bruce Beresford features - The Fringe Dwellers, Australia's official entry at Cannes in 1986, and Black Robe, the Canadian-Australian

co-production nominated for 10 AFI awards and 9 Canadian Film Festival Genie awards.

As a consultant, Ms Milliken has also conducted reviews of the South Australian Film Corporation (1987) and the Western Australian film industry (1992).

Dr Cunningham has spent many years as a teacher and researcher in Communications, Media Studies and Journalism at Griffith University. He is the author of two books, one of which is on the Australian television industry, and about 60 journal articles on film, media, cultural studies and broadcasting policy. In 1989-90 he was a policy adviser to the Communications Law Centre at the Unversity of NSW. He is also a

film reviewer, poet and film-maker.

'I welcome the contribution Ms Milliken and Dr Cunningham will make to the Commission,'' Ms Fatin said.

"Ms Milliken will bring experience in film-making and television production, and Dr Cunningham's appointment will provide the Commission with an important media policy dimension."
