ACCESS TO CHILD CARE IMPROVED IN THE CAIRNS DISTRICT

Families with children with disabilities in the Cairns district will have better access to private sector child care services as a result of a Federal Government grant.

Announcing details, the Federal Minister for Aged, Family and Health Services, Peter Staples, said additional funding of $24,400 would go to the Cairns and District Child Care Development Association Incorporated to improve the access to child care for children with

disabilities.

"While providing adequate support to child care centres we aim to ensure these services are accessible and appropriate to those with special needs," Mr Staples said.

The grant has been made as part of ongoing funding through the Federal Department of Health, Housing and Community Services, under the Supplementary Services provisions of the Children's Services Program.

Mr Staples said child care was an essential service for women opening the way to work and participation in the wider community.

"Access to affordable, quality child care is essential if we are to achieve social justice and equal opportunity.

Child care is critical to building more efficient and productive Australian workplaces," Mr Staples said.

Spending on child care under Labor will have increased almost tenfold since 1983 rising from $65 million in 1983 to $528 million next year.

Labor has increased the number of funded care places from 46,000 in 1983 to 193,000 at the end of June 1992. Also at the end of June 1992 131,000 low and middle income families were receiving assistance with their

child care fees through the fee relief system.
