MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Bruce Scott MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR MARANOA 3 December 2003 Scott urges drivers to support BP’s regional ethanol trial Federal Nationals Member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott today applauded the decision by BP Australia to begin retail marketing in regional Queensland of regular unleaded petrol containing a 10 per cent ethanol blend (E10 blend). Mr Scott said he has been a long-time campaigner of the establishment of a viable renewable fuels industry in Australia. “Today’s pledge by BP supports the Coalition Government’s Federal Budget announcements on ethanol along with the earlier decision to place a customs tariff on important ethanol,” he said. “Whist BP’s announcement is a great step in the right direction, I am now encouraging BP to extend its E10 trial into other regional retail centres, including those in Maranoa.” Mr Scott said it was now up to motorists to support BP’s trial E10 petrol over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. “Without the backing of consumers, it will be very difficult to establish a domestic ethanol industry as part of a renewable fuel push in Australia. “As stated by BP’s managing director for Queensland, if this trial is successful, the company would see a large potential for domestically sourced and manufactured renewable fuel. “This would have great flow-on benefits around the country including job creation in regional Australia,” Mr Scott said.
