AIR TRAINING CORPS AIRBORNE WITH FEDERAL GRANT

A $16,000 grant from the Federal Government will help the local Air Training Corps restore its aircraft to flying condition and provide valuable flying experience to young local people, North Queensland based Senator and Federal Regional Services Minister, Ian Macdonald said today.

Jointly announcing the grant, under the Federal Government’s Rural Communities Program, Senator Macdonald and Federal Member for Herbert Peter Lindsay MP, said that the money would put the "Air" back into "Air" Training Corps.

Senator Macdonald congratulated the officers and cadets of the local Air Training Corps for their own fundraising efforts which had seen them raise $11,252.70 to commence the restoration. He said that Federal Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay had impressed upon the Government the vital community building contribution that the Air Training Corps provides across North Queensland, to secure the remaining $16,078 for this highly regarded local youth organisation.

"Having travelled widely across the North, I am very aware of the valuable contribution organisations like this make to young people and the wide benefit to northern communities is apparent," Senator Macdonald said.

Mr Lindsay said that he was very proud to have been able to secure this much needed funding that was vital to getting the local Air Training Corps airborne once more.

"The Air Training Corps, like many similar organisations, makes an incredible contribution to the development of young people in Northern communities The return to North Queensland communities from supporting this project well and truly outstrips the dollar value of the grant."

600 young people aged between 13 and 19 across North Queensland will be assisted by today’s announcement in rural and regional centres including Townsville, Mareeba, Atherton Tablelands, Cairns, Innisfail, Ingham, Charters Towers, Burdekin, Bowen and Mackay.

"Today’s announcement is not just about flying, this is about the Federal Government helping to provide valuable experience and the development of leadership and self reliance in young people," Senator Macdonald said.
