Media Release Dr Michael Wooldridge Minister for Health and Aged Care

MW 111/00 20 November 2000

MINISTER PRESENTS KIDSAFE AWARD 2000 Federal Health Minister, Dr Michael Wooldridge, today presented D&D Technologies Pty Ltd with the Kidsafe Award for 2000 at its annual awards ceremony in Melbourne.

The company took out the coveted award for its magnetic latch known as the 'Magna Latch' that locks shut a gate automatically and securely and can only be opened by using the release knob which is out of reach of children.

The Minister said the innovative locking device will contribute significantly to government and industry efforts in reducing the number of childhood drownings in backyard swimming pools.

"D&D Technologies are to be congratulated for their ingenuity and hard work in coming up with a safety design that will no doubt prove critical to child safety in Australia's backyards," Dr Wooldridge said.

"The winner of three previous Australian Design Awards, the Magna Latch is essentially a safety gate latch for swimming pools and other safety gates.

"The latch works as a powerful magnet which ensures the gate remains closed and prevents the often tragic situation where a child will gain access to a swimming pool because the latch is merely resting on the gate and can be easily opened with just the slightest of effort.

"My Department is proud to support the annual Kidsafe Award, in conjunction with Johnson and Johnson, and I urge Australian industry and business to continue to be proactive and innovative in helping prevent accidental deaths and injury to children," Dr Wooldridge said.

Dr Wooldridge also congratulated the Britax company and the ACT Department of Education and Community Services for being awarded Certificates of Merit at this year's Kidsafe 2000 Award.

Kidsafe was established in 1979 and in that time accidental child deaths and injuries have reduced by half. The Kidsafe Award began three years ago.
