For the second consecutive day I asked the Prime Minister in Parliament about the circumstances of Bill Schulze - a young service station employee in Adelaide.

Like many schoolkids around Australia, 17 year old Bill works after school and on weekends at a BP service station.

Bill was recently suspended and suffered financial punishment as a result of not noting down all the registration details of drive-offs that occurred during his shift.

In addition Bill was last week offered a new AWA that cuts his base hourly rate of pay by almost $2 an hour, from $9.09 down to $7.17. The company’s stated reason to Bill for this cut in pay was to cover the costs of drive offs.

For the second day in a row the Prime Minister did not acknowledge whether he thought Bill had been treated unfairly.

Nor did he in any way undertake to ensure that other petrol station employees would be not be left vulnerable to similar unfair punitive measures.

Considering the Prime Minister’s colleague, the Member for Kingston, was made aware of Bill Schulze’s circumstances last week and that the Member for Kingston has been in direct contact with the Schulze family in recent days, it seems a bit rich for the Prime Minister to dodge the question for the second day in a row.

Do the Prime Minister and his South Australian colleague really care about the injustice suffered by Bill Schulze or do they just care to avoid any political fallout from the issue by feigning ignorance?

If the Government were genuine about their commitment to working Australians and encouraging more workforce participation they would have familiarised themselves with Bill’s case days ago.

I think most Australians would agree it’s absolutely unfair for young workers like Bill to be held responsible for the dishonesty of drive-away motorists.
