Iluka is developing a processing plant in Hamilton and a mine site near Balmoral.

The grant was announced today by Member for Wannon - David Hawker - who said he had strongly supported the funding application.

He said the money would be used to give businesses around the region the necessary skills to deal with a large internationally-focused company.

“Issues like tender processes and Occupational Health and Safety could be vastly different to those experienced before by many of our local businesses,” Mr. Hawker said.

“This programme managed by Southern Grampians Adult Education will give our business operators the skills necessary for them to have a fair chance of benefiting from working with Iluka.

“The arrival of the mining giant is great news for our region and will have a substantial impact on business and job opportunities.”

Mr. Hawker congratulated Southern Grampians Adult Education, Ausindustry and Hamilton’s SED Consulting.

He said SED Consulting would carry out the business training.

Mr. Hawker said the grant was provided under the government’s Small Business Enterprise Culture Programme.

He said a feature of the programme was that it would provide training for businesses as far away as Warrnambool, Horsham and Mr. Gambier.
