The Hon. Danna Vale MP Minister for Veterans' Affairs

Media Release Friday 28 May 2004

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Danna Vale, has encouraged Victorian veterans to get creative and enter the 42nd annual Victorian Veteran Community Story Writing and Art Competition.

"This competition encourages members of the veteran community to explore new and creative avenues of expressing themselves, such as story writing, art, craft and photography. Past competitions have drawn out an inspiring range of entries from novices through to the more experienced," Mrs Vale said.

“The competition also provides the opportunity for veterans to share their creative talents with the wider community.”

All art and craft entries will go on display at an exhibition in October, with the public invited to attend. Prizes and special awards will be presented at an official ceremony.

Photographs of the winning submissions in the art, craft and photography sections will be reproduced in a Story Writing and Art Competition book, along with the winning entries in the poetry and story sections. True stories of wartime experiences will be submitted for inclusion in the private records collection of the

Australian War Memorial.

“I encourage veterans, their partners and war widows in Victoria to participate in this popular program that supports and stimulates social rehabilitation through the development of new skills and interests," Mrs Vale said.

Entries close on 15 August.
