Harris: A first degree shouldn't cost a second mortgage

One Nation Senator Len Harris has renewed his pledge to stop the full-blown privatisation of higher education. "A first degree shouldn't cost a second mortgage," Senator Harris said from Queensland today.

"The Coalition wants to implement the user pays principle in education. People are sick of the Federal Government cutting taxpayer funded services," he said.

"The Federal Government is now getting more out of taxpayers, via the GST, than at any other time, but taxpayers are getting less bang for their buck," Senator Harris said.

"Since the introduction of the GST, the government has collected $80 billion and taxpayers are being asked put their hand in their pocket and pay more for education and health care. It doesn't add up," he said.

Senator Harris said the government had starved universities of public funding, had neglected students and had ignored the input of academia and peak bodies.

"Under this reform package, universities will be allowed to increase HECS fees and double the number of domestic full-fee paying students," Senator Harris said.

"It’s privatisation by stealth. Little by little, the government is whittling away public services like health and education. The push is coming via the WTO's trade liberalisation agenda," Senator Harris said.

The government's higher education reform package would also tie more than $400 million in federal funding for universities to new workplace relations regulations. "This is a very coercive approach," Senator Harris said.

"I have received thousands of emails, letters, faxes and personal representations from Quenslanders asking me to stop this education package. I take my direction from the voters in Queensland, not from market forces and international institutions," Senator Harris said. ENDS … Further Details: Senator Harris 07 4092 3194
