Second Round - Success for Boys Grants

22 November, 2006

Today the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, announced that 800 schools and clusters of schools nationally will receive grants under the second round of the Australian Government’s $19.4 million Success for Boys programme.

“The Australian Government is committed to improving boys’ educational and social outcomes, and through this innovative programme, the successful schools will receive grants of between $10,000 and $80,000 to help them improve the way they work with boys,” Minister Bishop said.

“Success for Boys aims to support boys at risk of disengaging from school, and improve boys’ learning outcomes and engagement in school. Teachers will be provided with high quality professional learning based on national and international research.”

The key intervention areas of benefit to boys to be addressed by schools are:

z Providing boys with opportunities to benefit from positive male role models and mentors;

z Improving literacy teaching;

z Using information and communication technology (ICT) to engage boys in learning; and

z Improving Indigenous boys’ educational achievement and engagement with school.

Minister Bishop emphasised that, “It is imperative that nothing is done which undermines the important and necessary progress made in the last 20 years in the education of girls, however there is evidence that boys are falling behind in our education system.”

“The Government has taken a leadership role in raising boys’ achievement, and we have demonstrated this commitment by allocating around $27 million over 2003-2008 for boys’ education programmes.”

“There has been strong interest in the programme, with around one in five Australian schools applying for funding in this second round, through which a total of $8 million in grants will be provided to 800 schools across Australia.”
