Australian & NZ Greens Demand Trans-

Tasman Royal Commission on GE Foods

The Greens MPs around the country have started a petition calling for a joint Australia-New Zealand Royal Commission on genetically modified food on the da y of the Health Ministers' meeting in Canberra.

"Communities on both sides of the Tasman have shown great concern over this issue. A joint Royal Commission could address fears that many regulations on genetically modified foods are being pushed through by ANZFA with minimal consultation.

"Setting up a Royal Commission is an executive act. At the minimum, the two governments could set up a joint Royal Commission by appointing the same people and giving identical terms of reference," said Ian Cohen MLC.

Lee Rhiannon MLC said there were already precedents for Royal Commissions investigating activities in other countries:

"For example, the success of the Maralinga Royal Commission was dependent on Australian and British Government cooperation.

“If we can have a joint statutory body such as Australia New Zealand Food Authority regulating our food standards, then we can surely have a joint Royal Commission. This is the minimum we should be doing to safeguard public health," said Lee Rhiannon MLC.

The call follows the recent tabling of a 90 000 signature petition by NZ Greens MP Jeanette Fitzsimons in the New Zealand Parliament calling for a Royal Commission into genetically modified food. The NZ Labour Party, which is expected to win government in the November elections, has indicated that it would support a Royal Commission.
