September 9,2004 Broadband for Bonville and improved mobile coverage for Upper Bellingen Valley

CDMA mobile coverage in the Upper Bellingen area will be improved as part of a major upgrade of the mobile phone coverage in the area.

The Upper Bellingen upgrade was announced by the Federal Minister for Communications, Information Technology and Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, during a visit to the Bellingen Valley last week.

Senator Coonan visited the Upper Bellingen and Dorrigo areas during her visit of the Cowper electorate with Federal member Luke Hartsuyker.

Mr Hartsuyker welcomed the Upper Bellingen CDMA announcement and confirmation that ADSL broadband will also soon be available in the Bonville area.

Bellingen already has ADSL broadband and Dorrigo will soon have access to the faster data transfer technology.

“The upgrade will enable Broadband technology to be delivered to Bonville residents and will substantially improve CDMA reception in the Upper Bellingen area,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

The supply of broadband in Bonville was the result of the Australian Government’s Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme (HiBIS) and the additional mobile coverage will be funded as part of a further $15.6 million commitment to CDMA technology.

Mr Hartsuyker said three new mobile phone upgrades in the Cowper electorate follow the launch of nine other mobile phone towers or upgrades in Cowper since 2001.

“This is part of the ongoing rollout of additional telecommunications in regional Australia,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Competition in the marketplace from both Optus and Vodafone has also seen those companies investing in local telecommunications infrastructure,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

During her visit to Bellingen shire Senator Coonan and Mr Hartsuyker also visited the Dorrigo Community Technology Centre.
