Democrats Welcome Stolen Generation Compensation

Democrat's spokesperson on Indigenous Affairs Senator Bartlett today welcomed the pending announcement by the Tasmanian government to offer a $4 million compensation scheme for members of the stolen generations, along with a formal government apology.

"This is a very positive and encouraging step from Premier Lennon and one that all states should seriously consider implementing to properly compensate those Indigenous people who were, and are, affected by this terrible practice."

"This action by the Tasmanian government puts to bed once and for all the continuing push by some Australians to deny the reality and existence of the stolen generation. Governments are not in the habit of compensating people who don't exist."

"Whenever I meet with Indigenous people and communities in my own state of Queensland, it is clear that the issue of stolen generation is still very raw, and many people and communities are still suffering the effects of this dispossession and loss of identity."

"The Democrats call on all governments, state and federal, to take this opportunity to re-examine the adequacy of their response to the tragedy of the stolen generation."
