$275,000 grant announced to support Focus on Families Program Thursday, 30 March 2006

The Federal Member for Braddon, Mark Baker MP, today announced $275,000 in Australian Government funding for Devonport’s Youth and Family Focus to assist with its Focus on Families Program.

Mr Baker said Youth and Family Focus was among 140 recipients across Australia to share in $20 million in funding allocated under the latest round of the Local Answers initiative.

“The Focus on Families Program will help 1500 people in the Mersey Leven community to develop stronger and more stable relations within our community,” he said.

“The program will develop pathways with first point of contact agencies within our community, including community groups and government agencies.

“These agencies will identify families in need of early intervention, ongoing counselling and support and coordinated case management who will then be referred to our program.

“With the aid of the Australian Government funding, a social worker will be employed to provide counselling, support and case management to these families with the aim of strengthening the stability and security of the home environment of the child or children.”

The Local Answers initiative is part of the $490 million Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, giving communities the power to develop their own solutions through small-scale projects.

“This funding is another example of the Howard Government’s continued commitment to helping families and communities across Australia,” Mr Baker said.
