Deputy Leader of the Opposition

Shadow Minister for Employment, Education, Training & Science Federal Member for Jagajaga

A Howard Government employment service is encouraging job seekers to work for an escort agency.

This morning an unemployed Tasmanian man registered with the Job Network discovered that amongst the list of jobs he had been matched to by the Howard Government’s Jobsearch database were two jobs entitled “LADIES OF ALL AGES.”

According to the job description, ladies of all ages were needed for a busy city escort service. The ad included a mobile number and job reference number for further inquiries.

It is outrageous that taxpayers money is being used to recruit workers, for an escort agency, particularly as many of the jobseekers being targeted are likely to be financially vulnerable.

The Employment Services Minister must urgently explain why this advertisement has been distributed through the Jobsearch database and detail exactly how many job seekers it has been sent to. He must detail how he will ensure that similar job vacancies are not being listed on the Jobsearch site.

Parents of young job seekers will be appalled if their children are receiving escort service job advertisements through a government service.

The distribution of this ad shows how little the Howard Government cares about producing real job outcomes for job seekers.

This is yet more evidence that the Howard Government’s Job Network system is a shambles.

The Howard Government was forced to admit this week that it will spend more than $30 million bailing out job network providers because the third Job Network contract is a financial disaster.

Wayne Swan MHR Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services

Dear Mr Swan

I am currently seeking employment, and I use the government's job network, and the government's job database on

I have a password which is used to log into my account. Yesterday, I was surprised to find that in the jobs that I was "matched" to in my account were two jobs entitled "Ladies of All Ages", which was desribed as "LADIES of all ages required for busy City Escort Service. Phone 0439 616 743"

I assume means prostitution/brothels. This raises two concerns for me. Firstly, as far as I know in Tasmania brothels are actually illegal in Tasmania, so why is the government-run job database promoting this? Secondly, I am concerned that the unemployed women will feel pressured into taking work as a prostitute in order to satisfy the requirements of mutual obligation and the requirement to be looking for, and willing to work.

Perhaps you will find this issue worth pursuing. I cannot forward a link to the page as it appears on my account, because that requires a password to access, but I can forward a link to the mirror page as it appears in The Mercury's website:
