Safer Communities Awards

The Minister for Defence, John Moore, today presented awards to people and organisations who have played key roles in keeping Australians safe from disasters.

At the inaugural Emergency Management Australia (EMA) Safer Communities Awards ceremony in Parliament House, Mr Moore commended state and territory finalists for their ‘best practice’ and innovative approach to preparing for, or preventing disasters, as well as their actions that have enabled communities to recover from disasters.

"These awards recognise excellence in emergency management and identify the ‘unsung heroes’ who work behind the scenes to prevent injury and save lives," said Mr Moore.

"From improving community knowledge in residential flood risk areas, to innovations in fire fighting, to the identification of people at risk from post-traumatic stress, the entries demonstrate the excellent work being performed right around Australia."

Mr Moore commented on the high standard of all 75 nominations for the national awards.

"All nominations deserve recognition. The EMA internet site at http://www.ema.gov.au has project summaries which detail the nominations and provide contact information, so that others can benefit from the outstanding work of the nominees," said Mr Moore.

EMA believes that all Australians can help prevent disaster, by learning how to better prepare their homes, businesses and communities in the face of potential threats.

"Managing disaster risk, from prevention through to preparedness, response and recovery, is an enormous job that involves community organisations, local councils and emergency authorities.

"Recognising their valuable work is one way of contributing to the safety of all Australians," Mr Moore said.

More information is available from Brian Flanagan of EMA, on 02 6266 5402 and 0409 489344.
