New Captain at Maritime Museum Smooth sailing is forecast for the Australian National Maritime Museum with the appointment of its new Director Ms Mary-Louise Williams.

'I am delighted Ms Williams has accepted this appointment-she has extensive skills and experience in the museum sector,' said the Federal Minister for the Arts, Peter McGauran.

'She has been with the Maritime Museum since 1988, when she was a Senior Curator preparing exhibitions for the official opening, and she has been an integral part of the team ever since.

In 1991, she became Assistant Director, Collections and Exhibitions, where she was a part of the Museum's Senior Management Team, and was responsible for making certain that the Museum's products and programs were accessible for a wide range of communities across Australia.

'The past few months have been extraordinarily busy and Ms Williams leadership as acting director has helped the Maritime Museum face the challenges and make the most of the opportunities,' Mr McGauran said.

'The Museum capitalised on the recent success of the Olympics, with an extremely successful venue-hire plan-and the future looks just as exciting.

'I am certain that Ms Williams will lead her team at the Maritime Museum with the vision and confidence that has become her hallmark.'

Mr McGauran also paid tribute to Mr Kevin Fewster, who was Director of the Museum since its opening in 1991.

'Kevin guided the Museum to its current position as one of the leading Maritime Museum's in the world-I wish him great success with his future endeavours,' Mr McGauran said.
