The Cavendish War Memorial will be upgraded thanks to a $1,000 Federal Government grant.

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - said today the funding would go to the Cavendish RSL Sub-branch.

He said it would be used to add the names of district veterans who lost their lives in World War One.

“This is a very worthwhile project because the memorial presently only has the names of World War Two veterans,” Mr. Hawker said.

“It is also a fitting use of funding from the Saluting Their Service programme which encourages communities to restore memorials, or perhaps build a new one where non currently exists.

“As well as adding the names, the grant will also provide for timber edging to be installed around new garden beds next to the memorial.

“The members of the RSL sub-branch are obviously doing some excellent work for the community and I am delighted the government has been able to play its part.”

Mr. Hawker said that in the relatively short time that Saluting Their Service had been going, it had provided almost $15,000 in funding for community projects throughout the south west.

He said the programme was aimed at encouraging communities like Cavendish to remember and honour Australians who served in wars, conflicts and peace operations since Federation.
