Appointment of Chief Government Information Officer [Ms Glenys Roper]

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Glenys Roper to the permanent position of Chief Government Information Officer (CGIO).

Ms Roper has been acting in the position as head of the Office of Government Information Technology (OGIT) since mid-November 1997. Her appointment will be for a period of three years.

The role of the CGIO is to bring a strategic, whole-of-government approach to the utilisation of information technology and telecommunications activities within Commonwealth departments and agencies.

OGIT has responsibility for 'Getting Government On-Line' through a range of initiatives announced by the Prime Minister on 8 December. These include Fedlink, Internet 2001 and the establishment of a Commonwealth Information Centre. OGIT also manages the Shared Systems suite, the Project Gatekeeper public key encryption initiative and Government telecommunications activities. The Year 2000 Project Office in OGIT has a key responsibility in working to ensure Commonwealth Government agencies are Year 2000 compliant by 1 January 2000.

Ms Roper was previously an Executive Director in the Australian Government Office of Asset Sales.

Prior to this, Ms Roper was the Controller of the Royal Australian Mint after holding a number of other Senior Executive positions in the Australian Public Service.

Ms Roper has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Letters from the Australian National University. She is a previous winner of the Channel Nine Business Sunday's Louis Vuitton Award for Achievement.

I look forward to working closely with Ms Roper and her staff.
