The Hon Mark Vaile MP

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry

18 December 1998

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Mark Vaile, today announced the appointment of th e Hon Ian McLachlan AO as Chair of the wool industry Future Directions Task Force.

"I earlier announced my intention to establish a wool industry Future Directions Task Force to provide guidance to the Government on what changes should be made in the strategic directions for the industry," Mr Vaile said.

"Its Terms of Reference are still being developed, but I can confidently say that they will broadly encompass:

  • development of a strategic path for the industry to achieve its desired outcomes;
  • a benchmarki ng study of wool against its competitor fibres;
  • a review of the structures for wool marketing and promotion; and
  • a review of the structures for wool research and development.

"I am very pleased Mr McLachlan has accepted the position of Chair of the Task Force. His corporate and government experience, combined with his position as one of the country’s largest wool producers, places him well to Chair the Task Force addressing the way forward for the wool industry.

"I will be announcing the remaining members of the Task Force shortly, once I have discussed the matter with Mr McLachlan."

Mr McLachlan was President of the National Farmers' Federation (NFF) between 1984 and 1988, prior to which he was President of the Wool Council of Australia.

"Mr McLachlan’s high profile and achievements during this time led to his being held in high regard in the rural sector," Mr Vaile said. "I am looking forward to a constructive process that will set the future directions for a viable and sustainable wool industry".
