Work for the dole restores Heritage house in Warwick

Unemployed people in Warwick are learning valuable skills while restoring a Heritage listed community building in Warwick, Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said today.

Mr Scott said 18 Work for the Dole participants are renovating and landscaping the Lighthouse building in Warwick - a project that will take six months.

“This is the second Work for the Dole project on the property - Mission Employment earlier led a group for six months to do initial reconstruction works.”

“This initiative will ensure the building is returned to its former glory. Works are being conducted based on a photo of the Lighthouse building, believed to have been taken in the early 1800s.”

Once renovated, the premises will be an important community meeting place, acting as a community activity centre for young and elderly people.

“Work for the Dole gives unemployed people work experience. It provides supervision by local people, and it involves teamwork and initiative by the participants,” Mr Scott said.

“Our project sponsors and Community Work Coordinators (CWCs) work hard to see that participants succeed. The general community, too, appreciates the benefits that the Work for the Dole programme brings.”

Mr Scott said in this round of projects for 2002, 200 new projects were approved across Australia, providing valuable work experience opportunities for a total of 2,159 job seekers.

He said since the pilot round in late-1997, nearly 11,000 projects had been approved, providing places for over 200,000 Australians to boost their job-hunting chances.

“Work for the Dole assists unemployed people to develop good work habits, while providing local communities with facilities and services that are of value - these new projects are good examples of the programme’s objectives,” Mr Scott said.

The Lighthouse community project is scheduled to finish in May 2003.
