Australian Research Council head pulls the plug

Further uncertainty and instability are in store for the nation’s researchers and scientists after news of the shock resignation of the Professor Vicki Sara, head of the nation’s key research body, the Australian Research Council.

Labor understands that the resignation comes after a disagreement with the Government. This does not bode well for the research community, Senator Kim Carr said.

The resignation comes at a critical time for the Government and the nation, with our research performance continuing to slide compared with competing nations.

Just before Christmas university Vice-Chancellor’s called for a $3 billion boost in research funding.

Australia is falling behind the rest of the world and Labor fears that Professor Sara’s resignation means the nation’s researchers are going to be let down by Government, again.

Research and innovation are the key drivers for better productivity and economic growth.

It is time for the Government to get fair dinkum about research, and fund it adequately.
