Irwin On Manilla Mission

4th April 2005

Federal Member for Fowler, Julia Irwin, will be putting Australia’s views on peace and international security at a meeting of representatives of more than 130 countries.

She is deputy leader of a delegation of six parliamentarians at the Manila meeting (4th - 7th April) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Mrs Irwin said the IPU was a stage for the exchange of views among legislators representing almost every political system and the main political leanings in the world.

The main topic of Mrs Irwin’s address will be on war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and terrorism.

She said the annual meeting of the IPU also served as a testing ground for new ideas and initiatives leading to important breakthroughs in the search for peace and advancing international co-operation.
