A new Community and District Family Services Centre in Hawkesdale has moved a step closer to reality thanks to a Federal Government grant of $202,400.

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - announced the funding today and said it would be used by Moyne Shire Council to help build the new Hawkesdale facility.

Mr. Hawker said the Australian Government funding would help provide preschool, child care and playgroup facilities.

He said it would also accommodate health services and counselling for the Hawkesdale community and surrounding region.

“Importantly, this centre will provide better educational opportunities for children in their early years in Hawkesdale and surrounding areas,” Mr. Hawker said.

“It will also offer life-long education, particularly in regard to health-related issues.

“Centres like this one planned for Hawkesdale help communities become more sustainable by providing better access to local community services.”

Mr. Hawker congratulated the Hawkesdale community for working together to secure the Regional Partnerships funding.

He said Regional Partnerships continues the Australian Government’s approach of working with local communities to support their own ideas and combines a number key regional programmes into one.

“This new Regional Partnerships programme has now injected almost $260,000 into the region over the past five months,” Mr. Hawker said.

“The programme it replaced, Regional Solutions, contributed almost $3 million to regional projects.”
