FEDERAL LABOR STATEMENT ON MOU BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND GALARRWUY YUNUPINNGU

Federal Labor respects the wishes of traditional owners who seek to negotiate leasing arrangements over their land.

We acknowledge the strong desire of Indigenous people in remote communities to secure jobs and economic development, homes, roads, schools, clinics and other facilities, especially for children.

Federal Labor understands that long-term leases provide the secure title needed to promote this much needed development.

The Memorandum of Agreement between the Federal Government and Galarrwuy Yunupinngu on behalf of the Gumatj clan will now start negotiations of a 99 year lease arrangement on Gumatj land.

Federal Labor recognises the important role of traditional owners in determining the future economic development of their land for the benefit of the local people.

We note that the details of the leasing model will now be negotiated with local people.
