Press Release Ref: 907 Published: 7/3/2003 Title: Carr breaks Regional Forest Agreement

NSW Premier Bob Carr is obviously going down the path of unravelling the Regional Forest Agreements (RFA), Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, said today.

“First we have seen his announcement of new National Parks in the north of the State which will undoubtedly put pressure on the wood supply agreements in that region,” he said.

“Then we see the Greens stopping legitimate timber harvesting in the Wandello forest and Carr effectively facilitates it for them.

“Rumours now abound that Carr will announce this weekend extensions to National Parks in the south east thus bringing into question State Forests ability to deliver on their responsibilities under the Regional Forest Agreement,” Mr Nairn said.

“This would place further threat on the viability of a number of timber industry businesses and the livelihoods of their employees.

“Some would be companies given joint Federal State funding under the Forest Industry Structural Adjustment program (FISAP).”

The Regional Forest Agreement followed extensive studies and the addition of hundreds of thousands of hectares of new reserves.

Mr Nairn said less than two years after signing the agreement, Carr is prepared to just abandon the deal without consultation.

“Carr is obviously moving towards trying to set up a cosy preference deal with the Greens at the 11th hour ahead of the March 22 state election.

“So under Carr’s plan, we give the companies assistance to stay in business after a shake-up of the industry then he forces them out of business for a bunch of preferences.

“This demonstrates how the NSW Premier is prepared to put votes ahead of people,” Mr Nairn said. Ends…
