ROGER PRICE MP Federal Member for Chifley

Most people in Western Sydney believe that the Howard government has halted the bulldozers at Badgerys Creek but they have failed to take note of the fine detail, the Federal Member for Chifley, Roger Price MP, said today.

“The reality is far more serious. Rather than making a firm and decisive decision - as promised - on Sydney’s second Airport, there has been a lot of political ducking and weaving”, Mr Price said.

The Howard Government has announced that it will not immediately proceed to build the Airport at Badgerys Creek and that is welcome.

But more significantly, it has made Badgerys Creek the default (and preferred) site for any second Airport, effectively ruling out any other site.

! It has ruled out Goulburn

! It has ruled out Williamtown

! It has ruled out Canberra

! It has ruled out Wilton.

The Howard government has promised to revisit this decision not to build Badgerys Creek at this time and there is no guarantee that the Howard Government will NOT build the Airport at a later date.

“If Sydney has to have a second Airport, John Howard has decreed that it will be built at Badgerys Creek”, Mr Price said.

“I make no apologies for campaigning with my Federal Colleagues to have the 1800-hectare Badgerys Creek site developed into a hi-tech Park delivering an estimated 100,000 jobs directly and 300,000 jobs indirectly”, Mr Price said.

“I pledge to work with my Federal, State and Local Government colleagues to turn this vision into a reality”, Mr Price concluded.

Ends 31 August 2001
