Cunningham MP Michael Organ has today expressed concern at reports of an increase in homophobic attacks towards students at the University of Wollongong during Sexuality Week.

“I understand that this week, Queer Collective signs have been defaced and ripped down and students have suffered verbal abuse,” Michael Organ said.

“The present attacks come hot on the heels of the government and ALP’s recent ban on same sex marriages and shows that homophobia is an issue which needs to be faced head on.”

“Universities should take active steps to ensure that students and staff can learn and work in a environment free of harassment and bigotry.”

“I hope that the University of Wollongong can counter these recent attacks and provide a safe campus for members of their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community.”

“I fully support the student’s ongoing occupation of the Belmore Room and call upon the university to provide a safe, accessible and central queer friendly place on campus,” Michael Organ said.

“I strongly believe that no person should be discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality,” Mr Organ said.
