14 November 2006

Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today released the report from the Values Education Good Practice Schools Project - Stage 1. The report outlines the involvement and the findings of 26 clusters of schools from across Australia in projects that exemplify good practice in values education.

The Values Education Good Practice Schools Project - Stage 1 demonstrated that good practice values education can:

1. lead to changes in teacher professional practice in classrooms and, in particular, in the way teachers relate to and communicate with their students; 2. produce calmer and more focused classroom activity; 3. enable students to become better self-managers; 4. help students develop greater capacities for reflection; 5. increase teachers’ levels of confidence in their approaches to their work and their sense of

professional fulfilment; and 6. produce strong positive relationships between students and between students and teachers.

“The schools in this report have demonstrated that values education can be taught effectively using a variety of different approaches,” Minister Bishop said.

Minister Bishop said, “The case studies and the findings will be of interest to many school communities around Australia and will support efforts at reinforcing values within the education system.”

The report is available from the values education website at

The report will inform future directions for values education in Australian schools and the Values Education Good Practice Schools Project - Stage 2, which will commence shortly.
