$9100 Grant for Light Horse Memorabilia Display

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Bruce Scott, today presented a $9100 Federal Government grant to the Canungra Troop of the 14th Light Horse to provide south-east Queensland with a mobile education unit featuring the history of the Light Horse,

Mr Scott approved the funding under the Their Service - Our Heritage program, which provides funding for commemorative projects of national or regional significance.

“The Canungra Troop of the 14th Light Horse would use the funding to meet the cost of equipping a mobile educational unit that will travel to schools and community groups across south-east Queensland,” Mr Scott said.

The educational display will include original Light Horse equipment while Troop members will provide instructional lectures to school students and the local community about Light Horse units and their military achievements.

“Increasingly, Australians are wanting to know more about their national heritage, including wartime heritage, and displays such as this are a wonderful way for future generations to learn of the contribution of their forebears.”

“Commemorative projects such as this together will ensure that Australia’s young people understand the contribution of our ex-servicemen and women and the role they played in securing the freedoms enjoyed today,” Mr Scott said.

Their Service - Our Heritage has provided funding to more than 1800 exservice and community organisations for projects in the leadup to the Centenary of Federation in 2001.

Projects supported have included displays of wartime memorabilia, the restoration and/or construction of community war memorials and the publishing of histories of Australia’s involvement in wars and conflicts.
